The Food Packaging Made from Sugarcane Waste

Bagasse (pronounced "buh-GAS") is the fibrous pulp left over after sugarcane stalks are pressed for juice. It's a byproduct — material that would otherwise be discarded or burned — that gets processed into rigid, heat-resistant food packaging.

The result is a container that holds hot soups, oily curries, and wet foods without going soggy, can go from the microwave to the table, and is accepted in commercial composting facilities across BC. It's one of the most practically useful eco-friendly packaging materials available.

For food businesses in Metro Vancouver, bagasse containers are also an accepted alternative under the Single-Use Item Bylaw — making them a compliant replacement for conventional plastic clamshells and plates.

Why BC Food Businesses Choose Bagasse

♻️

100% Compostable

Accepted at commercial compost facilities across BC. Certified compostable — not just "biodegradable" — so it meets Metro Vancouver bylaw requirements for compostable alternatives.

🔥

Microwave & Oven Safe

Handles heat up to 120°C. Goes from fridge to microwave without warping, splitting, or transferring off-flavours into the food — important for meal prep and catering applications.

💧

Grease & Leak Resistant

Natural fibre structure resists oil and water without plastic lining. Handles curries, stews, rice dishes, and wet salads without going soft or leaking through the bottom.

🌱

Made from Agricultural Waste

Bagasse uses a byproduct of sugar production — no additional land clearing, no virgin tree fibre. Lower environmental footprint than virgin paper or polystyrene alternatives.

Sugarcane Bagasse — Common Questions

Is bagasse the same as compostable plastic?

No. Bagasse is a natural fibre material — plant-based, not plastic. Compostable plastics (like PLA) are made from cornstarch and require industrial composting. Bagasse breaks down faster and is more widely accepted in BC's commercial composting programs. They behave differently and aren't interchangeable in sorting.

Can bagasse containers go in the microwave?

Yes. Bagasse is microwave-safe up to 120°C and can be used in conventional ovens at low temperatures. It won't warp, melt, or transfer chemicals into food — unlike some plastic or PLA containers that aren't microwave-rated.

Does bagasse meet the Metro Vancouver Single-Use Item Bylaw?

Yes. The bylaw restricts certain single-use plastic food containers. Certified compostable fibre containers — including bagasse — are an accepted alternative. Our bagasse products are certified compostable, making them a compliant choice for businesses operating in Metro Vancouver municipalities.

How do bagasse containers handle wet or greasy food?

Bagasse holds up well against oil and moisture without a plastic lining — better than plain paper or cardboard. The fibre structure is naturally dense. For very liquidy foods (broth-heavy soups), the lidded bowl format works best. For curries, rice dishes, and saucy foods, the clamshells and open bowls perform reliably.
